Celebrating women in Tanzania and beyond

Dar es Salaam, 8 March 2018: International Women’s Day is a time dedicated to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. The 2018 campaign theme, “#PressforProgress”, highlights the need to be unrelenting in our determination to achieve true gender equality for sustainable socioeconomic development.

Today, the Tanzania Country Office took a moment to celebrate the achievements of women and appreciate their contribution to making the world a better place to live. Championed by the Staff Association Chair, Ms. Irene Mwoga and her team, a special and delicious breakfast was organized at the “social corner” for all staff.

During the gathering, an elaboration on the objectives of the International Women’s Day was presented by Ms. Leticia Rweyemamu on behalf of WCO ladies. She noted that IWD is a day when women are recognized for their achievements and encouraged all men to support women for positive change. Noting good progress made towards advancing women’s development and bridging the gender parity in Tanzania, she cited an example of more opportunities for women in the public sphere specifically at workplace. She called for more efforts and willingness from both men and women to prevent and respond to gender based violence and press for progress. She encouraged all women to realize and believe in their potential as strong, smart, innovative and powerful individuals.

In his remarks, WCO Representative, Dr. Matthieu Kamwa, appreciated women’s presence and their potential in realizing progress and influence positive changes in the society. Dr. Kamwa shared a personal insight on the women’s ability to work hard, be instrumental for success and excellent helpers at all times. “Press to Impress. Because, you can. Go beyond the Tanzania borders, aspire for higher opportunities and excellence. Impress. ” was Dr. Kamwa’s call to women in the Country Office and all over the world.
