Eritrea Commemorated World Health Day 2018

Eritrea also joined the world commemorating WHD 2018. World Health Day is an international day devoted to the promotion of health. It is celebrated annually on 7 April to mark the anniversary of the creation of the World Health Organization (WHO). In Eritrea, it was held on 20th April 2018 at Orotta Hospital Conference Hall under the theme "Universal health coverage: for everyone, everywhere"; making an appeal health for all.

At the commemoration, MOH Director General of medical services, acting Director General of Public Health, Heads of UN Agencies, representatives from Health Institutions, Students, line ministries were present.

For Eritrea, UHC is a priority. The government recognizes that strong political commitment and community engagement is a valuable asset to ensure that everyone, everywhere in the country to have access to essential health services of quality without financial difficulties.

Dr Andebrhan Tesfatsion, acting Director General of Public Health representing the Ministry of Health in his opening remark emphasized that Eritrea is striving to realize the objectives of the UHC and achieving the SDGs. He highlighted some of the milestones Eritrea has made over the years, including the achievement of MDG4.  He also appreciated the support which is being given by WHO and the government is working focusing on the following key areas that were agreed upon: Leadership and Governance, Information, Analysis and Evidence, Raising and Use of essential Inputs, Health Services Delivery, Learning  and Documenting experiences. He also pointed out that more than 60% of the people have access to health services within a distance of 5 kms.

At the occasion, representing WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, Dr Josephine Namboze, WHO Representative in Eritrea highlighted that UHC means ensuring that everyone – no matter where they live or who they are – can access essential quality health services without facing financial hardship. It is a powerful equalizer that ensures “Health for All”, enhances health security, reduces poverty and promotes gender equality. She called on African leaders to live up to the SDG pledges they made in 2015, and to commit to concrete actions. In her remarks, she underlined that WHO will continue to support countries to build stronger, more resilient and responsive health systems through UHC to advance Health For All. 

Furthermore, UNICEF Representative in Eritrea, Dr Pierre Ngon explained that Eritrea ranks among the top 20 countries for exclusive breastfeeding of infants.  He also assured UNICEF readiness to continue supporting the country in its journey to achieve Universal Health Coverage. In addition, Dr Pierre mentioned among other things that UNICEF is procuring vaccines and mobile clinics which will be used for the hard to reach areas and will have significant impact towards UHC.

Short documentary on SDGs and UHC, general knowledge contest, banners, songs, drama and posters displayed made the event more entertaining, educative and attractive. Winners of the general knowledge contest were also given prizes.

The event received high coverage from different mass media, including TV, Radio and newspapers. As such, it was successful and fruitful event that conveyed important messages of health and the steps forward that are being taken by Eritrea to achieve UHC.
