To reduce the risk and mitigate the impact of future emergence of zoonotic, vector-borne and communicable diseases, South Sudan has operationalized and launched its One Health Multi Sectoral Coordination Mechanism.

The first ever One Health Mechanism was launched in Juba by Honorable Dr Martin Elia Lomoro, Minister of Cabinet Affairs alongside his counterparts from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and the Ministry of Environment with participation of other stakeholders.  

WHO South Sudan conducted a three-day staff retreat from 24 to 26 January 2023 in Juba.

The objective of the retreat was to do a self-reflection on the progress the office has made so far and how it can work better as a team to achieve the Triple Billion goals in South Sudan to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.”

The event brought together 187 WHO personnel from Juba and the States.

JUBA, 28 January 2023 – The Ministry of Health, the World Bank, WHO and UNICEF launched a COVID-19 vaccination campaign today, following the arrival of 3.9 million vaccine doses into the country. The Vice President for Service Cluster, His Excellency Hussein Abdelbagi Akol launched the campaign and government officials and attendees received required vaccines and booster shots to instill confidence and uptake by the general population.

In the morning hours of Thursday (19 January), Mr Adut Bullen Kot, brought his 3-year-old son to Yirol West County Hospital in Lakes state for measles vaccination. “I have seen a lot of children in the hospital suffering from measles. Today I brought my son to be vaccinated against measles because we must protect our children from the disease” said Mr Kot.

2 December 2022, Juba - Strategic and operational planning are important for translating the National Health Policy Vision and Goals into actionable interventions that contributes to transforming the health and wellbeing of the people of South Sudan in line with the National Development Strategy  and sustainable development goals.

To deliver health services across South Sudan, the Ministry of Health with support from WHO is developing the second Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSP) 2023-2027 to implement the second phase of the National Health Policy 2016-2026.

With the theme ‘collaboration for a better health outcome’, South Sudan celebrates International One Health Day to create awareness and enhance better understanding of human, animal and environmental health in strengthening collaboration and coordination for health emergency preparedness and response.

Over 150 participants took a major step to end malaria in South Sudan during the first-ever national malaria conference that took place from 8 to 10 November 2022.

Malaria remains the leading cause of illness and death in the country accounting for 66.8 per cent of outpatient consultations, 30 per cent  of admissions and about 50 per cent of deaths.

The Global Lead Coordinator of the COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership, Mr Ted Chaiban concluded a high-level advocacy visit to South Sudan to ensure COVID-19 vaccination efforts are accelerated.

Mr Daniel Deng Galuak, who worked for WHO as a field supervisor in the Polio programme, was shot dead by an unidentified attacker at a health facility in Bieh Internally Displaced Persons camp in the northern Bentiu city in Unity State, South Sudan.

The sad event occurred on 19 September 2022 during a supportive supervision visit to the health facility where he intended to monitor an immunization session and go through health records for possible cases of polio and measles that needed to be investigated and reported to the next level.
