Health Policies, Strategies and Governance

About the Programme
Governance and financing are essential for optimal functioning of health systems in countries. The health policies, strategies and governance unit works to support countries in developing up-to date comprehensive national health policies, strategies and plans (NHPSPs) that are well costed and financed towards universal health coverage and resilient health systems; to build the required capacity to implement and monitor those plans; and manage partnerships within health and with other sectors. The work of the unit contributes to facilitating stewardship capacity of national authorities to lead health development to attain good health at all stages of life and address health equity, the social determinants of health and human rights.

The unit’s objectives are to:

  • Facilitate stewardship capacity of countries to develop and implement policies , plans and related institutional, legal, regulatory and societal frameworks required to move towards universal health coverage
  • Guide countries to develop and implement sound health financing strategies to ensure financial risk protection for their populations and sustainability of health services
  • Build capacity and promote mechanisms for sound monitoring, evaluation and mutual accountability for resources and results
