Angola Reinforces Commitment to Maternal and Child Health

The health of women, children, and adolescents is a cornerstone of Angola’s national priorities, enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Angola. In a significant move to bolster this commitment, the Angolan government, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, has updated and validated the Integrated Strategic Plan for Sexual Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal, Child, Adolescent, and Nutrition Health (SRMNIA-N). This essential initiative is set to guide public health policies in the coming years.

Aligned with global and regional guidelines, the SRMNIA-N plan seeks to ensure universal access to quality health care, reduce maternal and child mortality, and enhance the nutrition of the most vulnerable populations. The strategy includes tailored approaches for each of the country’s 21 provinces, addressing local specificities to ensure that every action has a tangible impact on community health.

A National Technical Group has been established to coordinate the implementation and monitoring of the plan. This group will play a crucial role in ensuring that the strategic actions outlined in the SRMNIA-N plan are effectively executed and their impact is felt across all communities.

The WHO reaffirmed its unwavering support for Angola in executing this strategy. “Improving maternal and child health is a collective responsibility. With collaborative efforts, we can save lives and ensure a healthier future for generations to come,” stated Dr. Natércia de Almeida, WHO Sexual Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent, and Nutrition Health Officer in Angola.

The SRMNIA-N Strategic Plan marks a decisive step for Angola in strengthening its health system and reaffirming its dedication to the health of women, children, and adolescents. The effective implementation of this plan is vital for achieving targets aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, fostering a more inclusive and accessible health system for all.

The SRMNIA-N was updated and validated in Luanda during a three-day intense workshop held by the Angolan government, with the support of The World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners.
