Banjul, The Gambia - In a joint venture between the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), The Gambia marked its inaugural Universal Health Coverage Day on Monday, joining the global commemoration established by the United Nations on December 12, 2017. The occasion aims to raise awareness about the necessity for robust, resilient, and intelligent health systems, promoting access to Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Themed "Build the World We Want: A Healthy Future for All," this year's celebration in The Gambia featured a march from Senegambia junction to the Sir Dawda Kairaba International Conference Center.

UHC is regarded as a crucial tool in advancing the broader concept of the human right to health, which is rooted in various international agreements and widely affirmed international documents. It envisions a world where everyone, regardless of socio-economic status, enjoys access to essential healthcare without facing financial hardships. The importance of UHC has gained prominence as it aligns with the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the period 2015-2030, adopted by the United Nations. These goals underscore the global commitment to achieving universal access to healthcare services, promoting well-being, and leaving no one behind.

In many nations, healthcare systems vary widely, with some providing only basic and rudimentary services, lacking comprehensive coverage that includes critical interventions and long-term care. UHC Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the need for stronger, more resilient health systems that can deliver essential healthcare services to all individuals promptly and equitably. It emphasizes the shared responsibility of governments, international organizations, and communities to work collaboratively in ensuring health for everyone, everywhere.

Haddy Badjie, Deputy Director of Planning and Information at the Ministry of Health, welcomed the attendees, emphasizing the significance of participating in the worldwide celebration. She highlighted The Gambia's successful strides toward achieving UHC, citing the enactment of the National Health Insurance Bill and other initiatives. Ms. Badjie expressed gratitude to the WHO and other UN agencies for their support in realizing the Health Ministry's objectives.

Dr. Makawa Makawa-sy, speaking on behalf of the WHO representative in Gambia, congratulated officials for hosting the country's inaugural UHC day, signifying a heightened commitment to UHC. He noted that, annually, advocates worldwide use this day to share stories of those still waiting for health services and call on leaders to make substantial investments in health. Dr. Makawa commended The Gambia's significant progress in UHC, citing government initiatives that have positioned the country on the right track, including the National Health Insurance Scheme aimed at reducing out-of-pocket health expenditures.

Gibril Jarju, Director of Planning and Information at the Ministry of Health, deputizing for the Hon. Minister of Health, emphasized the importance of the day as an annual rallying point for the global movement advocating for the right to health for everyone. He underscored the need for stronger, safer, and fairer health systems to deliver essential healthcare services promptly. Mr. Jarju acknowledged the government's efforts, especially the enactment of the National Health Insurance Bill, as a testament to their commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage.
