COLLABORATION FOR A GREENER TOMORROW: UNITED NATIONS PARTNERS WITH LIBERIA IN THE MONROVIA CLEANUP INITIATIVE
Monrovia, 18 January 2024 – Yesterday, the United Nations in Liberia led by the Resident Coordinator, Ms. Christie Umutoni, joined hands with the International and local communities, and civil society organizations in a vigorous cleanup campaign that swept through the streets of central Monrovia. This collaborative effort, marking a significant step towards a cleaner and greener Liberia, saw hundreds of enthusiastic participants roll up their sleeves and tackle the challenge of waste management.
The initiative led by Community volunteers was launched on 30th November 2023 and has so far seen over 10,000 volunteers participate in the campaign cleaning over 6 million kilograms of waste. The turnout yesterday saw the active involvement of the UN family and the International Community including the European Union, Swedish and Chinese governments alongside community groups.
The energetic volunteers swept the streets- collecting plastic waste, discarded bottles, and other debris. The sense of solidarity and shared purpose was profound as persons of all ages came together to show their commitment to a healthier environment.
"In the same spirit to support volunteerism, community work, environmental protection, and waste management- we are here as the UN family as part of this exercise”, exclaimed Ms. Christine Umutoni- UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia. “However, it’s our wish that this becomes the DNA of the country for a cleaner and more sustainable future for Liberia. The enthusiasm and dedication we've seen today are truly inspiring."
The World Health Organisation contributed various materials towards the initiative including fuel, water, gloves, facemasks, and sanitisers.
"A clean environment isn't just about creating a beautiful environment; it's a foundation for public health. By tackling waste and promoting cleanliness, we're taking vital steps towards preventing diseases, improving sanitation, and fostering healthier communities. The WHO is proud to stand alongside the Liberian people, UN family, and International Community in this crucial effort”, narrated Dr. Musu Duworko- Office in Charge WHO Liberia Country Office. “Liberia's dedication to a cleaner future is an investment in the health and well-being of its citizens, and we believe this collaborative spirit holds the key to a healthier, more sustainable tomorrow for All”.
Beyond the immediate impact of cleaning up the city, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of proper waste management practices. The success of the cleanup campaign serves as a testament to the power of collaboration through community engagement and volunteerism. This is just the beginning of a journey towards a cleaner and healthier Liberia, and the UN remains committed to supporting the country in every step of the way.
