Government and partners redouble efforts to beat breast cancer in Nigeria

Abuja, 27 October, 2018 - There is now a renewed determination in Nigeria to save thousands of women who needlessly lose their lives every year from breast cancer. Abuja, 23 October, 2018 - “My phone rang on 22 August. The familiar voice on the other side sounded anxious. It was the local government area Director of Health who said ‘Dr Halima, we need you to come down to the clinic and support us immediately’. With over 10 years working on polio eradication, I realized that another call to duty beckons,” says Dr Halima Isa, an environment health officer supporting in active case search for polio, cholera and other emergency cases in the North East.

WHO works with government agencies to respond to floods across Nigeria

Abuja, 3 October 2018 - World Health Organization (WHO) is closely working with the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in States affected by floods to support the health response to the emergency. Based on its technical expertise and its field presence in all affected states, WHO is assisting Federal and state authorities with the assessment of the health situation and needs. 

Yobe State requests WHO’s expertise over fresh cholera outbreak

Damaturu, 27 September 2018 - The Yobe state Government has called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to deploy its human resources and technical expertise to contain the ongoing outbreak of cholera in the state.  Awka, 22 September 2018 - In a bid to scale up Integrated Diseases Surveillance and Response (IDSR) capacities, World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the European Union trains 862 health workers in Anambra State. 

The training which held on 03 -15 September 2018 is part of larger efforts by WHO and partners to empower local, state and national authorities to better protect Nigerians against disease outbreaks through prompt and effective detection, assessment and response to health emergencies.

“There’s no need over-emphasising the fact that WHO remains the pivotal point on which all health activities in the world rotates. Without WHO, we don’t know what the world will be today,” says Governor Okorocha.
