WHO Hands Over Cholera Commodities to the Ministry of Health to Strengthen Response Efforts

With the generous support of the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), WHO Zambia has handed over critical cholera commodities valued at US$70,000 to the Ministry of Health to support Zambia’s ongoing fight against cholera. The ceremony, held at the Zambia Institute of Public Health (ZNPHI), was officiated by the Minister of Health, Dr Elijah Muchima.

Since December 2024, cholera cases have been reported in the Central, Copperbelt, Eastern Lusaka, Muchinga, and North-Western Provinces. While the number of daily cholera cases is decreasing, efforts to end the outbreak are ongoing. The cumulative number of cases stands at 351, with nine deaths recorded.

Receiving the donation, Minister of Health Dr. Elijah Muchima thanked WHO for its timely intervention, stating that the commodities will play a crucial role in saving lives and alleviating the suffering of affected communities.

“The government of Zambia remains committed to fighting cholera. We have so far managed to contain the outbreak in Nakonde, Kasumbalesa, Chililabombwe, and Lusaka. Our efforts will continue to ensure that no new outbreaks emerge. We sincerely appreciate the unwavering support of the WHO and its partners in this effort,” Dr Muchima said.

Further, reaffirming his commitment to cholera prevention, Dr. Muchima urged the public to practice proper hygiene and sanitation and to ensure access to clean, safe drinking water.

Dr Clement Peter Lasuba, WHO Country Representative, commended the government, through the Ministry of Health, for its tireless efforts in curbing the cholera outbreak.

“I would like to commend the tireless efforts of the Government of Zambia, the healthcare professionals, communities, and all those on the front lines working diligently to contain the cholera outbreak. Your dedication is commendable, and your commitment to the community's welfare is inspiring. As the WHO, we reiterate our commitment to supporting the Ministry of Health and dedicate ourselves to ensuring that we bring this outbreak to an end to restore the health and well-being of all affected people,” Dr Lasuba said.

The donation includes oral rehydration salts, antibiotics, laboratory test kits, and other essential medical supplies needed to treat cholera and prevent its spread. This donation marks a significant step forward in the country’s cholera response efforts and symbolizes hope and resilience as Zambia remains vigilant in preventing future outbreaks.
