Ethiopia launches an integrated measles, vitamin A, and deworming campaign for displaced people in Gedeo Zone

The Ethiopian Ministry of Health has launched a preventive measles vaccination campaign to immunize 928 000 children aged 6 months to 15 years among the internally displaced and host communities in Gedeo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region. The campaign will also involve administering vitamin A to children aged six months to five years and deworming of children aged two to five years. Plans are underway for a similar campaign targeting 516 000 children in West Guji Zone of Oromia Region.

WHO prepositions medical kits to support disaster risk management in Gedeo Zone of Ethiopia

On 12 July 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) country office in Ethiopia delivered 50 basic Inter-agency Emergency Health Kits (IEHK) of drugs and medical supplies, six IEHK supplementary kits and five IEHK renewable kits containing gloves, needles, syringes and intravenous fluid sets to the Gedeo Health Department in Dilla town of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR) Ethiopia to support the zone in its response to the health needs of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) that it is hosting.  The medical supplies and drugs in the 50 basic Inter-Agency Emergency Health Kits (IEHK) will help treat 50 000 people for three months, the six IEHK supplementary kits have medical supplies and drugs to help treat 60 000 people for three months and the five IEHK renewable kits will support the treatment of 50 000 people for three months.   The supplies were delivered during the WHO Representative Dr Akpaka Kalu’s visit to the zone to assess the situation on the ground and meet with zonal and woreda health administration to discuss priority areas that the organization can support with to address the immediate health needs of the more than 800 000 IDPs sheltered in different locations in the zone.

Ethiopia launches the 1st round synchronized mOPV2 campaign

Addis Ababa July 09th, 2018: The launching ceremony of the first round of synchronized Polio (mOPV2) campaign was conducted yesterday on 9th July 2018 in Gode, one of the five selected zones of Somali Region. The launching was attended by representatives from Federal Ministry of Health, the Shabele zonal Administration Head, Mayor of Gode City administration, representatives from religious leaders, Gode town communities, mothers with children and partners including USAID, CDC, WHO, UNICEF, Core Group and other immunization partners.

Strengthening Health Literacy for Adolescent and Youth

17 May 2018, Addis Ababa: Strengthening Health Literacy for Adolescent and Youth Organizations workshop which is part of the activity planned to support the implementation of the WHO-Flagship programme for adolescent health in Africa is conducted in Ethiopia from 15-17 May 2018.The workshop aimed to strengthen youth leadership and meaningful participation in promoting health to adolescents who may be left behind from the mainstream development.

Global HEARTS’ Manual Adoption workshop held in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, 18 May 2018: The Global heart manual adoption workshop conducted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 15-18, May 2018. The workshop was aimed to adopt a Global HEARTS tools and protocols for Ethiopia. In Ethiopia primary health care is prioritized and valued by the government However, the health care delivery system is predominantly framed to address acute communicable, maternal neonatal and nutritional problems. Non-communicable disease services like Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) management and risk assessment is almost non-existent at primary health care. According to IHME 2015 data, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including ischemic heart disease, stroke, and hypertensive heart disease are Ethiopia’s second leading cause of premature death and disability (6,458 per 100,000 age-standardized disability-adjusted life year (DALYs).

WHO Country Office (WCO) Ethiopia trains staff on Theory of Change

Globally the work of WHO is shifting towards result-based management (RBM) in general and the theory of change (ToC) in particular. This is driven by alignment of the work of WHO with the WHO transformation programme as well as the 13th General Programme of Work (GPW13) already endorsed by the Executive Committee and expected to be endorsed by the World Health Assembly by the end of May 2018. Consequently WHO/AFRO had planned to train each WHO country team on TOC. The Ethiopia TOC workshop was held from the 7 to 11 MAY 2018 at Executive Hotel in Adama.

Ethiopia launched the 8th African Vaccination Week

Addis Ababa 23rd April 2018: The national African Vaccination Week launching in Ethiopia conducted with a press conference held at Hilton Addis Hotel in the presence of government higher officials, partners and different Media. The event was started by a brief presentation made by Federal Ministry of Health focusing on the objectives of the African Vaccination week, familiarization of the newly improved Maternal and Child Health card (Immunization card), which was also launched on this event as well as the next immunization priority directions.
