Banjul, The Gambia - On a rain-soaked morning, the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office presented a significant consignment of medical equipment, cutting-edge laptops, and computer tablets to enhance the surveillance system and data management at the Ministry of Health. Among the donated items were two pediatric Hemodialysis machines, 93 laptop computers, 78,000 bottles of paracetamol syrup, laboratory equipment, creatinine assay kits, 153 computer tablets, patient monitors, ventilators, and oxygen concentrators. The collective value of these contributions, exceeding 37 million dalasis, underscores the generosity and unwavering dedication of multiple stakeholders.

Dr. Desta Tiruneh, WHO Country Representative, expressed appreciation for being part of this transformative chapter in the ongoing journey to enhance the health and well-being of the Gambian population. He emphasized the profound impact of the donations, attributing their value not only to the material provision but also to the collaboration, commitment, and partnership that made it possible. With that in mind, the WHO Country Representative extended deepest gratitude to the governments of the Federal Republic of Germany, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom for their wholehearted support.

Dr. Tiruneh highlighted the diverse resources within the donations, ranging from laptops and computer tablets for transforming surveillance systems to indispensable laboratory consumables and advanced medical equipment fostering an environment of medical excellence. Reflecting on the indispensable role played by these donations during crises, Dr. Tiruneh underscored the extraordinary generosity and support of donors, especially during emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hon. Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, received the items on behalf of the Ministry, expressing gratitude for the longstanding partnership between the Ministry and WHO. He acknowledged the renewed partnership in recent years and highlighted the collaborative efforts during challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, measles outbreaks, and the AKI outbreak. Minister Samateh emphasized the importance of investment in health infrastructure, equipment, and consumables for the continuous development of the health sector.

The event, attended by officials from the UN System and the deputy chief of mission of the US Embassy, was a testament to the enduring partnership and shared commitment to fostering the health of all Gambians.
