WHO boosts Gambia’s disease surveillance for rapid polio response

Banjul -The Gambia, certified free of Indigenous wild poliovirus (WPV) in 2004, continues its vigilance against polio resurgence following the detection of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in 2021 and 2024 through environmental surveillance. In response, the country successfully implemented supplementary immunization campaigns, achieving over 95% coverage to curb potential outbreaks. Recognizing the critical role of surveillance in early detection, The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), through the World Health Organization (WHO), is reinforcing The Gambia’s disease monitoring systems to maintain its polio-free status.

On 10 March 2025, WHO’s Gambia Country Office facilitated a capacity-building workshop for 42 District Surveillance Officers and 46 Public Health Officers from key National Health Agencies.

The training enhanced their expertise in Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) and other Vaccine-Preventable Diseases Surveillance and Outbreak Response Strategies. Strengthening disease surveillance protocols and improving timely notification systems ensure swift case detection and intervention. WHO is equipping health officials with the tools needed to detect and respond to potential outbreaks effectively. This initiative reinforces The Gambia’s preparedness and resilience in safeguarding public health.
