Multidrug Resistant TB Hits Uganda
Kampala, 7 April 2011-- In Uganda today, there are 150 cases of Multidrug resistant tuberculosis that have been reported in the community. These and more cases are resistant to the recommended anti-TB drugs that include isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, ethambutol and streptomycin.
This revelation was made at the commemoration of the World Health Day 2011 under the theme: “Combat Antimicrobial resistance: No action, No cure tomorrow”. According to Dr Deus Lukoye the Coordinator of the National Anti-TB Drug Resistance Survey, out of every 100,000 Ugandans, 136 develop TB per year and 10% of all previously treated patients have shown resistance to more than one drug particularly isoniazid and rifampicin the most effective TB drugs.
