WHO Donates $159,000 Worth of Various Items to Ministry of Health
The World Health Organization donated various items including, information and communication technology and medical equipment, reagents and consumables as well as other supplies worth more than US $159,000 to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation on 17 May 2013. The items included Interagency Diarrhoeal Disease Kits, 24 sets of desktop and laptop computers and accessories, Elisa Plate Reader, Tapes for Autoclave, broad spectrum of Kits for cholera control, 1 Toyota Hard Top, 1 motor bike, 2 Desktop OptiPlex Computers, Inter core among others.
In her remarks at the handing over ceremony Dr Teniin Gakuruh, Officer in Charge of the WHO Country Office said that the donation was part of the Organization’s continued contributions and support in strengthening capacity of the Ministry and the country’s health system for better health outcomes. She urged judicious use of the items to facilitate the Ministry’s work while implementing priority health programmes.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Ministry, the Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Amara Jambai expressed gratitude for WHO’s continued technical and logistical support to the Ministry and the country’s health sector. He said the collection of items was critical and timely and that they will enhance effective disease prevention and control.
The major beneficiary programmes of the donation included, the Directorate of Disease Prevention and Control (DPC), the Central Public Health Reference Laboratory (CPHRL) and the Medical and Dental Council of Sierra Leone (MDCSL). The supplies to DPC will facilitate the prevention and control of cholera and other diarrheal diseases as well as disease surveillance activities including Rota virus. To support establishment of a digital information system with electronic database to store the Councils records, 1 desktop optiplex and 1 multi-functional Hp LaserJet printer etc. have been provided to the MDCSL. Other support provided include reagents and consumables to facilitate prompt and quality assured in-country diagnoses by the CPHRL.
