Dr. Tigest Ketsela Mengestu, WHO Country Representative bids farewell to the Government and People of Tanzania

April 2022 – Dodoma & Zanzibar: Dr. Tigest Mengestu, has bid farewell to the Government and the People of Tanzania after four years of meritorious service as the first female Country Representative for the World Health Organization in the United Republic of Tanzania. She paid a visit to the Honourable Ministers of Health in Mainland and Zanzibar to announce the end of her service in the country.

In a brief farewell reception, the Minister of Health, Honourable Ummy Mwalimu (MP) appreciated WHO’s leadership and support to the health sector especially in strengthening health service delivery and building country capacity to prepare and respond to public health emergencies. Appreciating the cordial relationship enjoyed when working with Dr. Tigest, Hon. Ummy said, “Our relationship has been sisterly throughout your stay in the country. We used to call you Subira (Swahili for patience), and you have stood true to your name. You are always most welcomed to Tanzania – your second home. I wish you the very best as you begin a new chapter.”

In a similar reception in Zanzibar, Honourable Minister of Health, Nassoro Mazrui thanked Dr. Tigest for the role she has played in improving health service delivery in the Zanzibar Isle and wished her a healthy retirement. “WHO’s support during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic was exemplary in terms of strengthening the health system building blocks to respond and recover from the impact of the pandemic.” said, Hon. Mazrui.

In her response, Dr Tigest said it was a pleasure and an honour to serve the people of Tanzania. She appreciated the good collaboration WHO has enjoyed with the Government and Development Partners.  Dr Tigest also commended the two Ministries for significant milestones achieved in the sector towards protecting the health of the nation. Finally, Dr Tigest thanked the people of Tanzania for their immense support to the work of WHO in the country. “Protecting and promoting health is everyone’s business. If we work together, we can achieve more and go far.”

The WHO Tanzania Country Office Staff Association also organized a farewell reception for Dr Tigest where staff had an opportunity to appreciate and thank her for being an inspirational and bold leader. All speakers commended Dr Tigest for her commitment, dedication, and passion towards improving the health of Tanzanians and people in the African Region. She was appreciated for cultivating a safe workplace and for caring about staff welfare beyond the office. Receiving local souvenirs as a token of appreciation, Dr. Tigest thanked all staff for receiving and supporting her to perform her duties as the WHO Country Representative.  “I could not have done it alone. The victories we celebrate today were achieved through teamwork. I am very proud to have been part of the WHO Tanzania family and remain very optimistic that the same support will be availed to the incoming Country Representative.”
