The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) is collaborating with the Ethiopian Ministry of National Defense and the Federal Police Commission of Ethiopia to establish and strengthen surveillance systems in the health facilities and structures serving armed and police forces, their families and communities. Critical in this process is a well-trained workforce with skills to collect, analyze, and interpret surveillance data and initiate timely public health response to health emergencies, reducing associated morbidities and deaths.

WHO launches first Mass Casualty Management (MCM) training in Addis Ababa

WHO Emergency Medical Team (EMT) in collaboration with WHO Academy held the first Mass Casualty Management (MCM) training course in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on February 8–11, 2021. The training was facilitated in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MoH) and WHO Ethiopia.  Thirty-one healthcare workers drawn from federal, regional, and private hospitals participated in the training.

Addis Ababa, 16 February 2021 – The World Health Organization and Canada signed an agreement to ensure functional health services in the context of COVID-19 in Ethiopia.  Through this agreement, Canada will provide WHO a grant amounting to 9.9 million Canadian dollars to strengthen the primary health care capacity to deliver essential health services, particularly for women, girls and vulnerable populations, while maintaining an effective response to COVID-19 to avoid additional preventable sickness and death among the Ethiopian population.

Ethiopia immunizes over 2 million girls against human papillomavirus (HPV)

Ethiopia has just completed a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign targeting 2.4 million 14 year-old girls across the country in two cohorts. One cohort took HPV1 – the first dose of the vaccine, while the second cohort was vaccinated the second dose of the vaccine (HPV2), which they missed due to school closures in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The vaccination was conducted in schools, communities and health facilities from January 25 to 29, 2021.

WHO supports Ethiopia’s response to a dengue fever outbreak in Somali Region

The World Health Organization Ethiopia country office is working with Somali Regional Health Bureau to contain the spread of dengue fever in the region. Close to160 confirmed cases have been recorded in Warder Woreda of Dolo Zone and 47 suspected cases in Dolo Ado Woreda of Liban Zone. Samples of the suspected cases from Dolo Ado have been sent to the regional laboratory in Hawassa for confirmation.
