Brazzaville – The African region has recorded the steepest decline globally in tuberculosis (TB) deaths since 2015, despite falling short of key milestones to significantly lower the burden of the disease and end its toll on health and lives.

Deaths from TB fell by 42% between 2015 and 2023 while cases declined by 24% over the same period, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) Global TB Report 2024. 

In a landmark collaboration to promote health equity for mobile and displaced populations, the World Health Organization (WHO), in partnership with the National Department of Health (NDOH), conducted a week-long Health System Review and an Agenda initiative focused on health, migration, and displacement in South Africa.

Freetown, 19 March 2025 – With 115 confirmed Mpox cases in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) and with support from WHO, UNICEF, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Africa CDC, and other health partners, has launched a nationwide Mpox vaccination campaign. The launch event brought together paramount and community chiefs, civil society representatives, the media, nurses, vaccinators, senior leadership of the Ministry of Health and NPHA, and key stakeholders from the health sector. 

Dar es Salaam -Tanzania is currently facing a critical challenge with one of the highest road traffic death rates in sub-Saharan Africa, at 16 deaths per 100,000 people. Many of these fatalities and disabilities could be prevented with timely emergency care. However, the country faces critical gaps in its emergency response system, including a lack of structured coordination, absence of formal emergency medical services, and no centralized dispatch system.

WHO Zambia has partnered with Prudential Zambia to launch the Health Facility Solar Installation Project, a groundbreaking initiative that marks the first collaboration between WHO Zambia and the private sector.

This pioneering project has been made possible through the generous support of the Prudence Foundation, the community development arm of Prudential PLC. The foundation has disbursed US$100,000 for installing solar panels in up to eight selected health facilities across Zambia.

Ethiopia has reaffirmed its commitment to global health security by submitting its annual health security assessment, known as the State Party Self-Assessment Annual Report (SPAR), to the World Health Assembly (WHA). This mandatory report, required under Article 54 of the International Health Regulations (IHR), evaluates the country's capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to public health risks.
