Harare - Dr. Desta Tiruneh, the newly appointed World Health Organization Representative for Zimbabwe, officially presented his credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Honorable Frederick Shava, marking the commencement of his tenure.

His appointment took effect on 1 April 2024.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia—The WHO Africa Regional Office (WHO AFRO) in collaboration with WHO Headquarters and WHO Ethiopia,  hosted the first regional workshop on preventing and responding to sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (PRSEAH). The three-day event, held from May 15 to 17, brought together 79 participants from 47 African countries to evaluate achievements from the last biennium, discuss challenges, and explore innovative actions related to PRSEAH.

In the remote district of Kapoeta East County, Eastern Equatoria State, life is a daily struggle for its 376 224 residents. This county, which borders Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda, faces severe health challenges due to harsh climatic conditions and food insecurity, including drought and seasonal flooding that hinder transportation and access to essential services.

The recent Acute Diarrhoea  Disease in Adigrat, Ethiopia, underscored the critical role of proactive measures and collaborative efforts in containing infectious diseases.

In Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States, at least 7.9 million people are in need of urgent support as a result of the humanitarian crisis.

Of the millions of people subjected to the crisis, the humanitarian response plan aims to target at least 4.4 million people in the BAY states, cutting across critical sectors such as health, nutrition, food security, protection, water and sanitation, etc.

Yobe, 20 May, 2024 one of Nigeria's states battling with cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) outbreak, has recorded nothing less than 2,728 suspected cases, with 212 laboratory confirmed of cerebrospinal meningitis, as of 16th May 2024, across 11 of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGA).

Jigjiga City, Ethiopia - Ethiopia's Ministry of Health (MOH) partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO) to observe World Malaria Day (WMD) in Jigjiga City. The theme for this year was "Accelerating the fight against Malaria for a more equitable world."

The event, held on May 11, 2024, aimed to raise awareness and advocate for intensified efforts against Malaria, a significant health threat in Ethiopia. 

As a result of the commendable work of the Ministry of Health and partners in strengthening immunisation, Angola has been free of wild poliovirus since July 2011 and declared the interruption of polio transmission in November 2015. This milestone demonstrates the government's continued commitment to public health and represents hope for a future free of vaccine-preventable diseases.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), convened a 2-day roundtable discussion to reflect on priority strategies and reforms to accelerate progress towards achieving sustainable and effective financing of health in Uganda.
