Songwe — The Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Health, has strengthened preparedness for Ebola Virus Disease caused by the Bundibugyo strain (BVD) in Songwe Region, increasing the region's readiness score from 76% to 86% through targeted interventions aimed at preventing, detecting and responding to potential outbreaks. 

Early detection of public health threats requires continuous capacity strengthening to detect early and monitor outbreaks and to build effective disease surveillance systems. The Ministry of Health rolled out the third edition of the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response guidelines in all 29 districts, using the One Health disease surveillance approach.

Lusaka, Zambia - The World Health Organization (WHO) has handed over critical Ebola preparedness equipment and supplies to the Government of the Republic of Zambia, reinforcing national capacity to detect and respond to emerging public health threats.

The consignment includes personal protective equipment (PPE), laboratory reagents, infection prevention and control materials, and specimen transportation supplies to support preparedness for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and other viral hemorrhagic fevers.

Maseru— Lesotho is charting a new path towards improved mental health care following the validation of its National Mental Health Policy on 20 May 2026, a key milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its health system and support the well-being of its population.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), commemorated World No Tobacco Day in Walvis Bay, calling for stronger policies, greater public awareness and community action to protect children and young people from tobacco and nicotine addiction.

Samburu County, Kenya - In Lolmolong village, in Samburu County in northern Kenya, Neshoo Leaungokiok laboured through the night, far from the nearest health facility.

With no transport available and a six-hour journey on foot to reach care, she had no choice but to give birth at home, assisted only by a traditional birth attendant. In this remote part of Kenya, long distances, difficult terrain and insecurity continue to limit access to skilled care during childbirth, placing mothers and newborns at significant risk.

But this time, help arrived.

The Government of Tanzania strengthened its commitment to improving public health emergency preparedness by conducting a two-day national level Table-Top Simulation Exercise in Morogoro on 3rd to 4th June 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Health’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit and WHO Country Office through Pandemic Fund support, the exercise brought together multisectoral experts to test the applicability of the newly developed National Guideline for Responders Deployment during emergencies, both within and outside the country.
