Juba, 1 September 2021 - South Sudan has begun producing oxygen following the successful installation of the country’s first oxygen plant at Juba Teaching Hospital, set up with funding from the African Development Fund.

The oxygen plant was procured as part of measures to support the country’s ongoing COVID-19 response with a grant from the African Development Bank Group’s concessional lending arm. The project was implemented by the World Health Organization (WHO) on behalf of the government.

Juba, 1 September 2021 – The European Union (EU) and WHO establishes molecular diagnostic laboratory in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State to increase testing capacity for COVID-19 and other high-threat infectious diseases.

In light of the efforts to expand COVID-19 testing in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal Region, a Polymerase Chain Reaction (‎PCR)‎ machine and other molecular laboratory accessories have been procured and installed for early diagnosis and commencement of specific interventions for diseases control.

The number of older people in the African Region is projected to triple from 54 million in 2020 to 163 million by 2050, with significant health, social and environmental implications. 

Over the past few decades, the maternal mortality rate in Ghana has seen a steady decline due to several factors and robust systems put in place to ensure safe pregnancy and delivery. Data available to the Ghana Health Service shows a total number of 875 maternal deaths in 2018 and 838 in 2019.  This figure further decreased to 776 in 2020 despite the increase in total deliveries while institutional maternal mortality ratio reduced from 117 in 2019 to 106 in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and all its associated impact.
