COVID-19: Strengthening Infection Prevention and Control Capacity in Mauritius

A Training of Trainers on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Case Management post COVID-19 is being conducted from 12 to 16 October 2020 at Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, Mauritius to strengthen capacity of health workers who are fighting COVID-19 at the forefront. WHO has successfully mobilised additional funding through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) and European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), European Commission in view of supporting the Ministry in strengthening  the IPC measures to prevent COVID-19 across community based, primary health care and educational institutions.  The training workshop was declared open by the Director Health Services, Dr Mariam Timol of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, in the presence of technical officers of the Communication Diseases Control Unit and high officials from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr Laurent Musango, WHO Representative in Mauritius and the technical staff of the WHO country office and some 30 trainers.

COVID_19 Update Rwanda

11 October 2020 — Four (4) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 2239 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to four thousand, eight hundred, and ninety-six (4896). To date, three thousand, six hundred, and six (3606) patients have recovered and been discharged, including forty (40) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is one thousand, two hundred, and fifty-nine (1259) and thirty-one (31) deaths. The new death is a male Rwandan of 41 years old in Kigali.

10 October 2020 — Two (2) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 2668 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to four thousand, eight hundred, and ninety-two (4892). To date, three thousand, five hundred, and sixty-six (3566) patients have recovered and been discharged, including eleven (11) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is one thousand, two hundred, and ninety-six (1296) and thirty (30) deaths. 


The new cases are in Kigali (1), and Kirehe (1); heightened vigilance is required everywhere.

09 October 2020 — Five (5) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 963 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to four thousand, eight hundred, and ninety (4890). To date, three thousand, five hundred, and fifty-five(3555) patients have recovered and been discharged, including thirteen (13) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is one thousand, three hundred, and five (1305) and thirty (30) deaths. The new death is a female Rwandan of 41 years old in Kigali.

Mental Health: Needing Greater Investment More Than Ever

The World Mental Health Day 2020 was marked on 08 October 2020 at the New Psychiatric Hospital in Beau Bassin, Mauritius during an official launching of activities by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailash Kumar Jagutpal in the presence of the high level officials of the Ministry, Dr Ameenah Sofeeran, Consultant Psychiatry, Dr Laurent Musango, WHO Representative in Mauritius and others. The different speakers advocated for increased financing for mental health and well-being in line with this year’s theme “Move for Mental Health: Let’s Invest”. Dr K. K. Jagutpal, Minister of Health and Wellness during his address, said that the country has made significant progress in improving and decentralizing mental health services. He added, “we need to keep on improving mental health services. We will ensure that the national health sector strategic plan 2020-2024 which comprises a strategic objective on mental health is implemented successfully to attain our objectives."

This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to four thousand, eight hundred, and eighty-five (4885). To date, three thousand, five hundred, and forty-two (3542) patients have recovered and been discharged, including one hundred and thirty-four (134) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is one thousand, three hundred, and fourteen (1314) and twenty-nine (29) deaths. 

UK Gives £1.3 Million to Fight COVID-19 in Uganda

Kampala, 8th October 2020- The British Government recently released a grant of GBP 1.322 million (UGX 6.11 billion) to support various aspects of Uganda’s fight against COVID-19. Activities funded by the UK grant are being implemented by two United Nations agencies, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
