Their neighbours in Muhindi, a small village in Kasese District of Uganda, had the same fear. But, thanks to their community surveillance training, all of them knew what to do.

The high-level advocacy event on cancer in Africa held in Niamey, Niger on the side-lines of the African Union summit ended with an appeal to African countries to integrate simple cancer interventions such as addressing risk factors as well as screening and early diagnosis at the primary health care level for more equity. The call was made by WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, while addressing delegates at the event.

Kano, 8 July, 2019 - In renewed efforts to vaccinate children traversing in and out of Nigeria, the World Health Organization (WHO) is supporting the government in an initiative to improve supplemental and routine immunization activities in the North Western region, which has a significant nomadic population.
Nomadic pastoralists live beyond the reach of established health care programs that are designed to serve sedentary populations. As a result, these groups are often under-immunized and out of the reach of existing disease surveillance activities.

Kampala, 6th July 2019:- All people who came into contact with the confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Kasese district yesterday completed 21 days of follow up without developing the disease. This means EVD transmission from the confirmed cases from the known contacts has been interrupted in Kasese.

Restoring essential health services after Cyclone Idai in Mozambique

More than 50 health facilities across Sofala Province, Mozambique, suffered serious damage from Cyclone Idai. WHO is working closely with the Ministry of Health and partners to assess and support the return of essential health services, using its Health Resources Availability Mapping System (known as HeRAMS).

“The roof had blown off most of the buildings and the water was more than one metre high. We had to move the patients out and put their beds up on top of the benches in the waiting area.
