Yobe, 01 June 2017 - Yobe state in northeast Nigeria has concluded the second round of vaccination campaign against meningitis, with technical and financial support from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Results from the campaign which ended on 27 May 2017, indicate that 136,355 persons aged 2-29years were vaccinated with ACW meningitis vaccine in Fika, Fune, Gujba and Damaturu Local Government Areas (LGAs). The coverage is more than the expected number of people targeted in the campaign.

Abuja, 01 June 2017 - Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole has announced the immediate implementation and enforcement of key sections of the World Health Organization ( WHO) Framework Convention Tobacco Control, which include the prohibition of sale of tobacco products to persons below 18 years.

Accra, 31 May 2017 - The World Health Organization (WHO) office in Ghana in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and Foods and Drugs Authority launched the Smoking Cessation Clinical Guidelines for Ghana and Tobacco Control Regulations, LI 2247 during the national launch of World No Tobacco Day celebrations in Ghana.  The occasion also saw the presentation of the 2017 World No Tobacco Day, Director-General’s Awards to Mrs Olivia Agyekumwaa Boateng, Head of Tobacco and Substance Abuse, Foods and Drugs Authority.

Liberia’s Ministry of Health, WHO and partners held a ceremony at the Ebola treatment facility in Monrovia to celebrate the recovery and discharge of a 2-year-old boy, the final patient in a latest flare-up in Liberia. His 5-year-old brother recovered a week earlier.
Liberia’s and Guinea’s last known Ebola patients in a latest flare-up of the disease that hit both countries have now been discharged. All remaining contacts of confirmed cases that were placed under a 3-week period of medical monitoring have been cleared.

31 May 2017 - Only 1.8 million people of the 6.5 million people living with HIV in western and central Africa were on antiretroviral therapy at the end of 2015. This 28% treatment coverage of people living with HIV in the region contrasts with the 54% coverage in eastern and southern Africa in the same year.

Praia 31/05/2017 – Cabo Verde is raising more attention towards tobacco control and joined the rest of the World to remind us that “Tobacco is a threat to development", the theme of this year’s celebrations. Several activities, organized by the Ministry of Health and Social Security and the World Health Organization, took place all over the capital.

These actions were aimed at strengthening the fight against tobacco consumption, highlighting the associated health risks and raising awareness of the need to protect present and future generations.

FREETOWN (31 May 2017)—Sierra Leone’s latest Maternal Death and Surveillance Report, released today at a launch in the capital, Freetown, calls for united actions from government, health workers, communities and partners to tackle the high number of maternal deaths in the country. In all, a total of 706 maternal deaths were reported during 2016, though the report suggests that the true figure may be much higher still.
