Ethiopia holds first National Mental Health Symposium

Freetown, 11 August 2014 – President Ernest Bai Koroma made his third visit to the Ebola Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the WHO Country Office in Freetown today 11 August. The President last visited the Centre on Saturday 9 August. In today’s visit the President participated in the daily meeting where he received briefing by the Minister of Health and Sanitation Ms Miatta Kargbo and the EOC body on the decisions, required actions and measures agreed upon by the EOC members as well as progress and challenges in the response.

Freetown, 9 August 2014 – The President of the Republic of Sierra Leone Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, on Saturday, visited the Ebola Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the WHO Country Office in Sierra Leone. This is the second visit of the President in 10 days. He made true his promise during his first visit on 31 July that he would be following up on the emergency response activities of the EOC.

Abuja, 08 August, 2014 - The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll, has re-assured WHO and other GPEI Partners in Nigeria of his resolve to utilize the capacities of the Sultanate Council and other resources at his disposal to reawaken the commitment of traditional leaders towards Polio eradication, disease surveillance and routine immunization who in turn, will raise public awareness to unprecedented levels until interruption of polio transmission is achieved in Nigeria.

Addis Ababa. 6 August 2014 – A half-day orientation on Ebola virus disease outbreak preparedness and response organized by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) took place yesterday in Addis Ababa.

Adjumani, 6th August 2014:- Uganda commemorated the World Hepatitis Day (WHD) with weeklong series of activities  under the theme “Hepatitis; Think again”. The national  commemoration was held at Mayors Garden in Adjumani district presided over by the Minister of Sate of Health (Primary Health Care) Hon Sarah Opendi Ocieng.

Members of the National Traditional Council of Liberia addressed their communities in the 16 counties of the country. They urged people to take all possible measures to protect themselves from, and encouraged them to welcome the health workers helping in the response. 

WHO Ethiopia Moves to the New Office Facility in the UNECA Compound.  

WHO Ethiopia would like to announce to its partners that it has changed its office location and has moved to the New Office Facility (NOF) within the UNECA Compound. Office phone,fax and extension numbers will remain the same.

WHO will be housed in the ground and first floors of NOF.

Immunizing children against measles is a priority in the Central African Republic. In January 2014, more than 115 000 children aged 6 months to 15 years were vaccinated in health centres across the country by national health workers with support from WHO, the International Red Cross and partners.

As of 2012, of every 100 children born in the country, 13 died before their fifth birthday. Measles can kill up to 1 in 25 children affected with the disease, and remains a public health problem in the Central African Republic. People, therefore, welcomed the vaccination campaign.
