Dar Es Salaam, 14 March 2012 - Opening a workshop on oral health in Dar Es Salaam on Wednesday (14 March), the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Jakaya Kikwete, praised the World Health Organization for its initiative to develop a manual on the prevention and management of oral diseases at the primary health care level.

There is an idiomatic expression that states, “Strength in numbers”. This idiom is being taken to heart in Namibia as it convened a Stakeholder Consultation meeting on 29 March 2012 with the aim of improving collaboration and coordination among health sector partners. The meeting brought together nearly 40 participants from Government, UN Agencies, United States Government Agencies (USAID and CDC), embassies, academic institutions and NGOs.

Brazzaville, 09 March 2012 - On Sunday, 4 March 2012, at about 8.00 am, a series of explosions were heard at the military camp of the Armoured Regiment, located at the Mpila suburb of Brazzaville. Over 200 people have been reported dead so far and more than 1000 people were wounded. The wounded are being treated at public hospitals across the city.

Brazzaville 8 March 2012 – Agencies of the United Nations system are working hard to support the Government in dealing with the disaster that claimed many human lives and led to the destruction of houses and an influx of displaced persons following explosions in the ammunitions depot of the Congolese Armed Forces, last Sunday, 4 March 2012, in Mpila suburb in Brazzaville.

To promote and sensitize all staff on the objectives of the international women’s day, the WHO Country Office marked the event on the 8th of March at the WCO Cafeteria.

The WR gave a brief opening remark that emphasized on the critical role the female staff members have on the day to day delivery of the WHO Eritrea Country Office. Female represent 64% of the WCO staff.

The National TB control programme under the Federal Ministry of Health has finally started a nationwide population based national TB prevalence survey. Advocacy, enumeration and data collection has started in three states in the southern part of the country. Take off is built on the experiences of the pilot survey which was conducted in March/April 2011.

Though TB control and prevention efforts in Nigeria has progressed relatively well over the almost two decades of the introduction of the DOTS Strategy, it still constitutes a public health challenge.

Kampala, 2nd March 2012 - The Government of Uganda, with support from the World Health Organization and other partners has adopted a multi‐sectoral approach to respond to the Nodding Syndrome that is affecting some districts in the northern part of the country. The Office of the Prime Minister will lead and coordinate the response with aspects such as health handled by the Ministry of Health; nutrition by Ministry of Disaster Preparedness; hygiene and water supply by Minister of Water and Environment; and finance by Ministry of Finance.

Harare, 19 Mar. 2012 A meeting to finalize National Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) master plans and annual plans for 2012 in the WHO African Region kicked off today in Harare at the Crown Plaza. The meeting, which has participants from Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania (Mainland and Zanzibar), Zambia, Uganda ,Zimbabwe, WHO AFRO, HQ, World Bank, and the Global Network for NTDs will be running from 19-23 March.
