Over six million children will be immunized

27 February 2012, Luanda, Angola - Today UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, launched the three-day polio campaign in Viana municipality of Luanda the capital of Angola, aimed at vaccinating over six million children under five years of age Nation-wide.

Namibia, 24 February 2012 -- The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the occasion of Healthy Lifestyle Day, urges Namibians to take action and adopt healthier lifestyles to prevent the growing incidence of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) or Lifestyle Diseases. The prevention of NCDs is high on Namibia’s agenda.

The National School of Midwifery, Ministry of Health and Sanitation, sworn-in 55 newly qualified midwifes on 18 February 2012. The mid-wifes were awarded certificates after completing their training for 18 months in midwifery. The certificates were awarded by Mrs Annerieke Owen-Huisman, wife of the US Ambassador to Sierra Leone.

The Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Roads Transport Authority (SLRTA), Dr Sarah Bendu, on Thursday 9 February paid a courtesy call on the WHO Representative in Sierra Leone, Dr Wondimagegnehu Alemu. The purpose of Dr Bendu's visit was to discuss road safety which she described as a "major challenge facing the public".

On 15th February 2012, H.E Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein expressed his recognition on the WHO’s major contribution in the health sector in the African Region.

Brazzaville, 20 February 2012 -- Since the end of the Cold War, state and non-state actors -- including the World Health Organization (WHO) -- have come to rely on health diplomacy, in its various forms, to advocate for the improvement of the health status of populations including in the African region.

Tanzania has been honoured to host the Multi-country workshop to strengthen results and accountability for women's and children's health and the health sector as a whole.

The workshop drew about 100 participants from ten African Countries namely Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Regional institutes and Global partners namely WHO (WHO Geneva, AFRO and Country Office), UNICEF, UNFPA, UNAIDS, PMNCH, HMN, CDC, World Bank, USAID, NORAD, CIDA, DFID/E4A, GIZ, Africa MNCH Coalition, World Vision and others.
