Brazzaville, 4 February 2011 -- Knowledge and awareness of cancers by individuals and communities can play a crucial role in the prevention, detection and treatment of the disease, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, has said.

Kenya hosted the First African Regional workshop on coordinated approaches to pneumonia and diarrhea prevention and control. The Director of Public Health and Sanitation, Dr. Sharif Shenaz officially opened the four-day workshop titled "protect, prevent and treat" on Tuesday 25th January 2011. The workshop, the first in a series of regional workshops aims at finding synergetic actions accelerating the implementation of the Global Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Pneumonia (GAPP) and diarrhea among children under five years of age.

The celebration in Angola of the World AIDS Day on 1st December 2010 was an opportunity for the Government of Angola and partners to continue to raise awareness to the Angolan population about HIV/AIDS, it´s social and economic impact and improve solidarity face this pandemic.

The event is one of the most visible and gives the opportunity to increase public and private partnership in Angola to expand awareness about the status of the pandemic and encouraging progress in the HIV/AIDS Prevention, treatment and care interventions.

Brazzaville, 16 December 2010 -- A Strategic Health Operations Center, known simply as the AFRO SHOC Room, has been established at the Brazzaville headquarters of the WHO Regional Office for Africa.

The facility will serve as the hub for coordinating response to outbreaks, epidemics, pandemics, natural or man-made disasters and other public health emergencies in the region.

The First Lady, Her Excellency Lucy Kibaki, represented by the Minister of State for Special Programmes was the guest of honor at the national celebrations held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

As many as 450 million people are at risk from meningococcal A disease, the primary cause of epidemic meningitis across Africa. The disease kills thousands every year. Major group A epidemics occur every 7-14 years and are particularly devastating to children and young adults. The sickest patients typically die within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. Of those who survive, 10 to 20 percent suffer brain damage, hearing loss or a learning disability. 

27 August 2010, Addis Ababa -- The WHO Ethiopia Country Office in collaboration with the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) convened a half day consultative meeting to deliberate on the WHO Global Health Sector Strategy for HIV/AIDS: 2011 – 2015.

The meeting brought together a wide section of stakeholders from FMOH, UN Agencies, NGOs, PLWHA Associations, bilateral and multi lateral agencies among others.
