Promoting family planning in rural communities
In Cabo Delgado, only 2.9% of women between 15-49 years are using a family planning method, according to the Demographic Health Survey 2011.
In the end of October, WHO along with UNFPA, Ministry of Health and the Provincial Directorate for Health in Cabo Delgado visited three diverse districts to talk to people about their views on family planning. In the districts, Chiure, Mueda and Mocimboa da Praia, key stakeholders including community and religious leaders, users and potential users, activists, and health staff were consulted on the knowledge of and access to family planning methods. The data collected will be used to inform a Communication for Behavioral Impact (COMBI) implementation plan supporting the Ministry’s newly developed Health Promotion Strategy 2015-19. The plan will tailor messages and channels of communication according to the needs in the province.
The data collection for the plan was led by Prof Everold Hosein as part of a new WHO/UNFPA joint project on Support to Cabo Delgado province to reduce the burden of maternal, neonatal and child mortality and morbidity financed by the Korean KIMCHI fund.
