Ethiopia - National Maternal Death Surveillance and Response System Annual Report 2009 EFY

For the third consecutive year, Ethiopia has synthesized nationally aggregated data on maternal deaths that have been reported through the Ethiopian Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) system. In this Annual MDSR report, we present data for maternal deaths that have occurred in the Ethiopian fiscal year (EFY) 2009. This report provides an overview of maternal mortality throughout the country, highlighting key indicators by geography and socio-demographic distribution of deaths, as well as data on its causes and determinants. As in previous reports, the three Delay model is used to characterize shortcomings in the health system related to community knowledge and preparedness (delay in recognizing a problem), transport costs and infrastructure (delay in reaching care), and clinical service quality (delay in obtaining required care). Recommendations for addressing these delays follows interpretation of the data in a chapter focused on evidence-based responses at every level of the health system.

Ethiopia - National Maternal Death Surveillance and Response System Annual Report 2008 EFY

This is the second Ethiopian national Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) report, providing analysis and interpretation of data reported for maternal deaths occurring in the Ethiopian fiscal year (EFY) 2008. In the first 3-5 years of a national MDSR system the data will reflect the fact that implementation of the system is still being established and strengthened. In 2008, reporting increased and expanded, and the balance between community and facility reports changed from previous years. For these reasons, it is too early to start comparing MDSR data from year to year. This 2008 annual report should be considered a stand-alone document, reflecting the data received and leading to key recommendations based on the evidence. In future years, however, these annual reports will be used to track changes in patterns and trends of maternal mortality over time.

Ethiopia - National Maternal Death Surveillance and Response System Annual Report 2006-2007 EFY

The Ethiopian national Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) system has been active since 2006 (Ethiopian calendar), with formal integration into Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) data collection since 2007. Maternal death is one of the 14 immediately reportable conditions in Ethiopia. This reflects reflecting its prioritization at all levels of the health system and the political commitment to working towards preventing the majority of maternal deaths. This report is the first national MDSR report, and summarizes key findings from the first two years of the MDSR system, 2006-2007. All case-based reports following local review of maternal deaths have been collected into the national MDSR databases managed by EPHI for regular analysis. In future, annual reports will be produced to allow for year-to-year comparisons.
