WHO Namibia sports team scoops awards at UN Africa games
The United Nations 13th All Africa Games held in Swakopmund, Namibia on 22-23 September 2023 brought together competitive athletes and sport fanatics from across 10 African countries for a thrilling display of talent, sportsmanship, and unity. This remarkable two-days event showcased the power of sports in fostering international cooperation and celebrating the rich diversity of African cultures.
The Games served as a platform to promote mental health through sports, unity, and harmony among United Nations staff in Africa. By bringing together athletes from various countries, this event was a catalyst for networking beyond a professional environment. It provided an opportunity for athletes to showcase their skills, while also promoting cultural exchange and understanding.
Swakopmund, a scenic coastal town in Namibia, served as the ideal host for the Games. Known for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and cold weather, the town also provided a breathtaking backdrop for the event. Its well-kept sporting facilities and warm hospitality ensured a seamless experience for participants and spectators alike.
The 13th All Africa Games featured a wide range of sporting disciplines, including athletics, football, basketball, badminton, and many more. Athletes from different nations competed fiercely, pushing their limits to achieve personal bests, bring glory to their countries and respective agencies. The level of competition showcased by WHO staff in Namibia was one of the greatest highlights of the event, as it proved that not only do they encourage the importance of healthy lifestyles to their stakeholders, but that they indeed practice it in their personal lives as well.
Japhet Nashipili won gold in 200 the meter race for men. Moses Gabriel won gold in the 10km race for 18-44 years and Ezekiel Kambongi silver in the same race. The team also scooped silver in the 100 by 4 relay race for men with several WHO staff members participating. Additionally, Yvonne Kandakuze was part of the UN Namibia netball team that placed third in the netball competition Three of WHO staff members, Japhet Nashipili, Eliabba Kandume and Ezekiel Kambongi played for UN Namibia Soccer team which won silver.
The WHO Country Office also nominated two members, Mrs. Elmarie Eiman and Mrs. Gbubemi Jacdonmi to serve as the medical team during the UN game. A large contingency of staff went to support the different teams, cheer them on and participate in the different networking events.
Beyond the sporting competitions, the event also celebrated the rich African cultural heritage with live cultural performances by participating nations. Spectators were treated to vibrant displays of traditional music, dance, and cuisines, providing a glimpse into the diversity of the Namibian cultures.
The United Nations All Africa Games also served as a platform to raise awareness on mental health and pledge support towards community-based organization working in mental health promotion and suicide prevention.
The UN All Africa Games 2023 was a resounding success, showcasing the power of sports in uniting nations, celebrating African excellence in sports and strengthening partnerships for the Sustainable Development Goals agenda.
