The Security Services Unit (SEC) ensures the safety of WHO staff, dependents, and operations in the African Region, enabling the effective delivery of WHO's mandates. They conduct risk assessments, implement crisis management plans, provide security training, and use innovative technologies to address threats. Collaborating with UNDSS, host governments, and stakeholders, the SEC team fosters a strong security culture, supports health emergency programs, and ensures a safe environment for WHO's work.

The Security Services Unit aims to foster a robust security culture within the WHO African Region, ensuring a safe and secure environment for staff and operations. By prioritizing safety and security, the unit enables the smooth and effective delivery of WHO mandates throughout the region.

The Security Services Unit is responsible for providing operational support to ensure maximum security for staff and eligible dependents, and to enable the safest and most efficient implementation of WHO programmes and activities in the African region.

• Ensure the safety and security of all personnel, including staff, recognized dependents, consultants, partners, and visitors, as well as the protection of assets and facilities. 
• Provide security support to enable the smooth and continuous implementation of health emergency programs in high-risk operational contexts.
• Develop and implement crisis management plans to respond effectively to emergencies and security incidents.

• Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
• Maintain a sustainable safety and security awareness program.
• Work closely with UNDSS, host governments, and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated approach to security.
• Use new security technology tools and innovative solutions to improve security measures and response capabilities.

• Conduct security assessments of facilities and operations to identify risks and recommend mitigation measures.
• Respond to security incidents and emergencies, providing immediate support and coordination with UNDSS and/or relevant authorities.
• Organize and conduct security training programs for personnel, including emergency response, personal security, and crisis management.
• Monitor security situations and provide regular reports and updates to the Management.
