Combat Drug Resistance: “No action today, No cure tomorrow”

Addis Ababa, April 7, 2011 ‐- Left unchecked, the uncontrolled rise in resistant germs threatens lives and wastes limited resources. Urgent and coordinated action is required at all levels to ensure the preservation of these life‐saving drugs for future generations, said WHO Country Representative, Dr. Fatoumata Nafo – Traoré, in the keynote message she delivered on the day on behalf of Dr. Luis Gomes Sambo, Regional director for the WHO African Region.

The second day of the meeting of health experts of African countries as part of the 6th Session of the African Union (AU) Conference of Ministers of Health (CAMH6) continued with deliberations on Harnessing Africa’s Demographic Dividend, the Africa Diaspora initiative on enhancing capacity and strengthening the healthcare workforce on MNCH, and on AU-G8 accountability report on AIDS, TB and Malaria. A side event on CARMMA was held. In addition, the participants shared experiences on the new momentum global and regional developments in tackling NTDs.

The 13th World Congress on Public Health  will take place from 23 to 27, April 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme; “Towards Global Health Equity: Opportunities and Threats”. This Congress offers unique opportunities to discuss global, continental and national public health issues among the global public health community and other key stakeholders. The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, will deliver the Keynote address.

25 April 2013: The African Ministers of Health hold their 6th Conference at the AU, Addis Ababa, under the theme, “the impact of Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) on the development in Africa.” The two day conference provides an opportunity for Ministers of Health to discuss, share experiences, acknowledge the challenges posed by the growing trend of Non communicable Diseases and Neglected Tropical Diseases and is expected to produce recommendations that shall reposition the African continent in addressing challenges posed.

Ethiopia wrap up commemoration of African Vaccination Week

27 April 2013, Addis Ababa -- In a colorful event at Selam Health Center, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Dr Luis G. Sambo, WHO Regional Director for Africa joined in solidarity as Ethiopia wrapped up series of events launched for the commemoration of the week-long African Vaccination Week. The commemoration was launched at Asella, East Arsi Zone of Oromiya Region, 170 KMs South of Addis Ababa on 21 April 2013. The theme for this year is “Save lives, Prevent disabilities, Vaccinate!”

Ethiopia launches National Master Plan on Neglected Tropical Diseases

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 12-14, 2013 -- His Excellency Dr Keseteberhan Admassu, Minister of Health of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, launched the National Master Plan of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in a high level symposium held at Hilton International Hotel on 12 June 2013. More than 400 participants representing federal government offices, regional health bureaus, and partners attended the meeting. Among the partners, WHO, USAID, DFID, World Bank, Bill & Melinda GATES Foundation, international NGOs and research inistutes and acadamia have been reperesented.
