Cancer Prevention and Control in Namibia

The increasing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is evident in most developing countries and Namibia is no exception. Cancer is one of the four major NCDs with cervical, breast, and prostate cancer being amongst the top 5.

Although data on the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) burden in the general population of Namibia in not year available, in Southern Africa, about 3.2% of women in the general population are estimated to harbour cervical HPV-16/18 infection at a given time. 61.8% of invasive cervical cancers are attributed to HPVs 16 or 18.

Opuwo Health District will get a Maternity Waiting Home

Expectant mothers in the Kunene region will soon be able to have better access to safe delivery services. The Opuwo Town Council signed a contract with Hauseb Construction JV Ya Kandundu Investments on 28 September 2017 for the construction of the Maternity Waiting Home. The contract signing was followed by the handing over of the site to the contractor for works to commence and the much awaited Maternity Waiting Home will be completed in February 2018.

In an effort to promote the development, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive multi-sectoral national suicide prevention strategies, the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) with support from WHO, hosted a two-day (10-11 May) regional training workshop on Suicide Prevention in Windhoek, Namibia. The workshop was aimed to strengthen the technical cooperation on suicide prevention strategies among countries. It also presented the opportunity to share effective evidence-based interventions relevant to the regional context and identify pathways to engage communities in suicide prevention.

WHO, NAMBTS and MOHSS celebrate World Blood Donor Day

Windhoek, 14 June 2017 – The World Health Organization Namibia country office in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MOHSS) and the Namibia Blood Transfusion Services (NAMBTS) on 14 June commemorated the World Blood Donor Day. The event, which serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood, saw blood recipients giving testimonies and donors being honoured with certificates. The commemoration was held at the NAMBTS office premises.

Oshakati, 23 October 2006 -- The health authorities from Angola and Namibia have elaborated a joint plan of action to reactivate the prevention and control of the common communicable diseases and other issues along their borders, on specially Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Polio, Epidemiological surveillance and social mobilization. This decision has been taken at the end of a meeting held in Oshakati, Namibia, from 17th to 19th October 2006.

WHO Hands-Over Pandemic Influenza Vaccines to Ministry of Health and Social Services

Windhoek, 21 May 2010 -- Vaccines to protect against the Pandemic Influenza H1N1 2009 virus, were handed-over to the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) from the World Health Organization (WHO) at the Central Medical Stores today. A total of 216 000 doses were received from WHO headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday, 19 May 2010. USAID donated syringes and other essential supplies to compliment WHO’s donation. In addition, WHO is availing NAD 1,250 million to support vaccine operations.
