WHO guidelines on leishmaniases: treatment of visceral leishmaniasis and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis in eastern Africa and South-East Asia

WHO's updated guidelines set out treatment recommendations for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) in eastern Africa and South-East Asia, the subregion that accounted for 73% of VL cases reported globally to WHO in 2023. They introduce new treatment regimens for PKDL, alternative options for primary VL in eastern Africa, weight-band allometric dosing of miltefosine, and risk-mitigation measures following reports of ocular adverse events.
