This year, the World Blood Donor Day was commemorated nationally in the northern region of Tanzania, Kilimanjaro.

The occasion was officiated by the Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Hon. Leonidas Gama on behalf of the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Hon Dr. Hussein Mwinyi and attended by the Lordship Mayor of Moshi Municipal, regional officials, ministry of health officials, WHO staff, CDC, DANIDA and other partners, voluntary blood donors, the media and the Kilimanjaro community members.

Major events on WBDD, 2012

On 11th September, 2012, the Government of United Republic of Tanzania (Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) and Prime Minister’s Office Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG)) in collaboration with the WHO Country Office officially launched the initiative to strengthen district health services in Tanzania. The launch was officiated by the Deputy Minister PMORALG, Hon. Kassim Majaliwa (MP) in Dodoma.

The Government of United Republic of Tanzania on 24th–25th September, 2012, hosted the Third East Africa Conference on Alcohol in Arusha drawing participants from the five East African countries i.e. Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania and others from Malawi, South Sudan, Norway and Sweden.

On 6th December, 2012, Tanzania historically became the second country, in sub-Saharan Africa to launch the introduction of two new vaccines simultaneously in the routine immunization schedule. The national launch took place in Dar es Salaam and was officiated by the First Lady of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mama Salma Kikwete. Others also present to witness the launch were the Regional Commissioner for Dar es Salaam, Hon. Said Meck Saddick; the Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Hon. The fourth Annual Regional Conference on Immunization commenced today, 10th December, 2012, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The three days conference has brought together experts from different countries within and outside the African region, delegates from UN agencies, bilateral and multilateral development institutions, Non-Governmental organizations, foundations and civil society with the aim to discuss how to strengthen the delivery of immunization services in all Member States in the African Region.

On 12th December, 2012, The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Luis Sambo visited the United Republic of Tanzania mainly with the purpose to participate in the 4th Annual Regional Conference on Immunization.

This year, the United Republic of Tanzania commemorated the World TB Day by holding a press conference and officially launching the national operational guidelines for engaging Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the TB control activities in the country.

On 22nd March, 2013, the United Republic of Tanzania in collaboration with the European Union and the World Health Organization signed a Tripartite Memorandum to improve pharmaceutical systems and access to quality medicines in the country. 

On the 28th March, 2013 the WHO Country Office handed over to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, vehicles and equipment to support major activities in the area of immunization as well as surveillance at the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA). 
The items handed over included: 7 vehicles, 129 fridges, and temperature monitoring tools, 3 desk top computers, 3 UPS, 4 laptops, 1 photocopy machine, 1 printer and 1 scanner. The value of all these items is USD 1,685,369.45 equivalent to Tsh. 2,733,669,248.

The Government of United Republic of Tanzania is hosting a multi-country scale up workshop at the Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health (TTCIH) in Ifakara on the “One Million community health workers” campaign. The workshop participants include key national representatives from ministries of health of ten (10) African countries. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Seif Rashid.
