Health Ministers to discuss strategies and actions to tackle public health challenges in the African Region

Brazzaville, 12 November 2015 – Delegates from the 47 countries in the WHO African Region will meet in N’Djamena, Chad from 23-27 November 2015, for the annual session of the WHO Regional Committee. The week-long meeting is hosted by the Chadian government.

The Regional Committee is the annual flagship meeting of ministers of health from the Region during which they discuss a range of strategies and actions to tackle public health challenges in the Region. As the highest decision-making body on health, its decisions have over the years contributed immensely towards improving the health and well-being of people in the Region.

Dignitaries attending the meeting include: Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO; Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa; senior WHO officials; representatives of agencies of the United Nations system; bilateral and multilateral organizations; nongovernmental organizations; and high ranking decision-makers from Ministries of Health.

Priority topics on the agenda for this year’s Regional Committee include:

  • Research for health: a strategy for the African Region, 2016–2025 
  • Global strategy on human resources for health: perspectives from the African Region
  • The Transformation Agenda of the WHO Secretariat in the African Region
  • Progress report on the establishment of the Africa Centre for Disease Control 
  • The African Public Health Emergency Fund (APHEF) 
  • The 2014 Ebola virus disease outbreak: lessons learnt and way forward
  • Progress  on the implementation of the Health Promotion Strategy for the African Region
  • Progress on Strategy for Addressing Key Determinants of Health in the African Region
  • Progress on the establishment of the African Medicines Agency.

An updated RC65 Journal will be posted on the web every morning from 24 November 2015.
