Call for applications: Membership of the African Advisory Committee on Health Research and Development (AACHRD)

The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) is pleased to announce a call for applications for membership of the African Advisory Committee on Health Research and Development (AACHRD). This multidisciplinary, multi-sectorial committee plays a vital role in advising the WHO Regional Director on matters related to health research and development strategies in the African region.

About AACHRD:

Established in 1979, AACHRD provides high-quality, well-considered advice and recommendations on policies for research for health and development, supporting one of WHO's core functions which includes shaping the research agenda and stimulating the generation, translation, and dissemination of valuable knowledge. 

Who should apply:

The expertise sought include but not limited to:
•    Epidemiology
•    Behavioural and Social sciences (including gender, human rights, and community engagement)
•    Health economics
•    Biomedical/clinical research
•    Statistics
•    Health systems and policy analysis
•    Public health research (including environmental health, entomology, etc.)
•    Digital health
•    Biomedical engineering

Eligibility criteria:

•    Advanced degree: Candidates should possess an advanced degree (e.g., PhD, MD, MPH) in a relevant field.
•    Professional experience: A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in health research, policy development, or related fields, with a strong track record of contributions to health research and development in the African region. 
•    Publication record: A strong history of peer-reviewed publications that have significantly influenced public health policy or practice.
•    Previous experience on advisory committees: Include previous experience serving on similar advisory committees.
•    Geographic and economic representation: Candidates should represent a diverse range of countries across the African region. We also welcome applications from other parts of the world.
•    Gender and diversity: WHO AFRO encourages applications from both male and female professionals, as well as applicants from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.

Term of service:

•    Members will serve an initial three-year term, with the possibility of renewal for one additional term. Members are expected to attend meetings including the annual physical meeting and contribute to ongoing discussions and advisory activities throughout their term.

1.    Curriculum vitae (CV): Detailing educational background, professional experience, and publication record.
2.    Cover letter: Outlining your interest in the AACHRD, relevant expertise, and how you meet the eligibility criteria.
3.    Letters of recommendation: At least two letters from professional colleagues or supervisors who can attest to your qualifications and suitability for the committee.

Submission instructions: Please submit your complete application package via email to assohoulutyc@who.int or deam@who.int by 16th December 2024. Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel, and shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further consideration.

Confidentiality and conflict of interest: Selected members will be required to complete a WHO declaration of interest and sign a confidentiality agreement prior to appointment.
