Geneva, 23 May 2008 -- The World Health Organization Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis G. Sambo has called for continued national and international commitment to prevent and control noma, -the disease that disfigures the faces of its victims beyond recognition.

Speaking at an event held in Geneva to mark the first No Noma Day (22 May), Dr Sambo said: “In the 21st century, when there have been significant scientific and technological breakthroughs in health sciences, the world has no excuse to remain passive about this disease. It is time to act and say No to Noma".

"The key challenge is getting adequate financial resources. Today as we mark the first Noma Day, I call upon all partners, governments, foundations, institutions and individuals to join the efforts to control this disease", he said.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the epicentre of noma which is caused by a deficiency of the immune system associated with poverty and malnutrition. It is estimated that 43 000 cases have been identified to date in 22 Member States of the WHO African Region.

Dr Sambo cited the successive gradual yearly reduction of the incidence of noma in Niger; an achievement which is being replicated in other countries; as an example of what can be accomplished through effective partnerships.

The event was organized by the No Noma Foundation, Winds of Hope and the International Dental Federation with technical support from WHO. It was attended by dignitaries including ministers of health, academics, NGOs and some members of the diplomatic corps.

Other speakers were Dr Bertrand Piccard, President of the No Noma Foundation, and Dr Conrad Burton, President of the International Dental Federation.
