Extraordinary Meeting of the African Vaccine Regulatory Forum (AVAREF)

Extraordinary Meeting of the African Vaccine Regulatory Forum (AVAREF)

Brazzaville, Congo, 5-7 April, 2016
Creating a New vision and Blueprint for a strengthened AVAREF

Heads of National Regulatory Authorities and National Ethics Committees/Research Policy Departments and other regulatory experts from countries in the WHO African Region will meet in Brazzaville, Congo from 5-7 April, 2016 to prepare a new vision and blueprint for the African Vaccine Regulatory Forum (AVAREF).

Over the past 10 years the African Vaccine Regulatory Forum (AVAREF) has strengthened the capacity of countries in the African Region to regulate clinical trials, particularly of vaccines and has contributed to access to vaccines.

Since its establishment, the regulatory environment has dramatically changed in the African region with new opportunities including the African Medicines Regulatory Harmonization initiative and the African Medicines Agency (AMA). The meeting provides a unique opportunity to make AVAREF stronger, more efficient, and better placed to address the ethics and regulatory challenges in Africa.

It is expected that this meeting will agree on an  expanded AVAREF with new governance structure, strategy and operating model, aligned to the African Medicines Regulatory Harmonization (AMRH) Initiative.
