In 2021, WHO supported the health authorities in the Gbêkê region of northern Côte d'Ivoire to launch the "Gbêkê Là-Haut Là" initiative.
This program aims to reduce maternal deaths by enhancing the skills of the health workforce, particularly midwives, in managing obstetric complications such as postpartum haemorrhage—the leading cause of maternal death in the country.
Over three years, the initiative seeks to reduce avoidable maternal deaths by 75% from 2022 to 2024, with a targeted annual reduction of 25%.
