Malawi receives the UN Interagency Task Force award for instituting strategic steps towards the prevention and control NCD

On 23 September 2019, during the United Nations General Assembly high level meeting the Minister of Health, Mr Jappie Mhango, MP received the United Nations Interagency Task Force award because of the commitment demonstrated by Malawi towards the control and prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).The occasion took place at the United Nations building, conference room number 7 in New York. The Non-Communicable Diseases Synergies and Social change at Harvard Medical School was the one that recommended the nomination of Ministry of Health and Population in Malawi after noting the ministry’s leadership in instituting strategic actions towards prevention and control of NCDs.

Malawi receives medicines from the Russian Federation

Lilongwe: On 3 October Mr Illiya Madiev, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Russian Federation to Malawi handed over medicines to the Malawi government at a ceremony that took place at the Community Health Sciences Unit in Lilongwe. The Guest of Honor was the Minister of Health and Population, Honorable Jappie Mhango, MP and the distinguished guests were the WHO Representative, Dr Nonhlanhla Rosemary Dlamini and the Secretary for Health, Dr Dan Namarika.

WHO and MOH brief Malawian journalists about the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak situation in the African Region

On 13 August 2019 journalists from five media institutions namely; Malawi News Agency, The Times Group, Nations Publication Limited, Zodiak Broadcasting Station and Malawi Broadcasting Coorporation  in Malawi were informed of the status of the Ebola Disease outbreak in the African Region. This took place at a press conference that took place at Ministry of Health and Population headquarters in Lilongwe. The Guest of Honour was the Minister of Health, Honorable Mr Jappie Mhango, MP.

Malawi hosts the first ‘Salt reduction intercountry workshop in the African Region’

From the 17 to 21 July the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization country office in Malawi hosted participants from 9 countries in Africa at a workshop on salt reduction and dietary interventions to prevent and control cardiovascular diseases and hypertension in particular. The nine countries represented were South Africa, Lesotho, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botwana, Swaziland, Namibia, Malawi and the Seychelles. The distinguished guests during the opening ceremony were Dr Charles Mwansambo who is the Chief of Health Services, Dr Leslie Mgalula, the Acting WHO Representative for Malawi and Dr Jones Masiye, the Head of the Non-communicable Diseases Unit in the Ministry of Health.

Malawi administers Oral Cholera Vaccine to over 500,000 people in Lilongwe Urban

The Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign started in Lilongwe on 17 April 2018. The vaccine is being administered from 17 to 21 April and is targeting all people that are over one year and living in urban and semi urban areas of Lilongwe city where the cholera outbreak is still active. These areas are within the catchment areas of the following health facilities: Area 18, Kawale, Area 25, African Bible College, St Kizito, Chimwala, Bwaila and Likuni. A total of 500,000 people are expected to receive OCV.
