Botswana Achieves Milestone in Polio Eradication: Second IPV Dose Rolled Out Nationwide
Polio remains a critical global public health concern, particularly with the resurgence of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2). In Botswana, the detection of cVDPV2 in environmental surveillance in 2022 and 2023 highlighted vulnerabilities in population immunity. In response, the Botswana National Immunization Technical Advisory Group, BOTSNITAG conducted a rigorous review of scientific evidence, concluding that introducing a second IPV dose would substantially increase immunity among children under two years of age.
Following the deliberations conducted by NITAG in collaboration with Ministry of Health and WHO, Botswana has taken a decisive step towards eliminating poliovirus by introducing a second dose of the Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (IPV) into the routine immunization schedule across all districts in June 2024. This landmark initiative follows the strong recommendation by the Botswana National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (BOTSNITAG), marking a significant advancement in the country’s fight against polio.
The introduction of IPV2 was successfully integrated into the routine immunization program in line with the National Immunization Schedule. The DHIS System was updated to monitor IPV coverage and Adverse Events Following Immunization through the VigiFlow platform. The EPI program has started monitoring the uptake of IPV2 and the coverage rate is as follows; June 42.8%; July(51.9%);August (52.1%) and September this year. As Botswana continues to strengthen its immunization program, this milestone serves as a testament to the nation’s proactive approach and dedication to safeguarding public health for future generations.
