HIV and AIDS Laboratory Capacity
Where are we?
Overview of laboratory capacity in Africa 2005-2007

This is the second assessment of laboratory capacity to support HIV prevention and care in the WHO African Region (WHO/AFRO) conducted by the WHO Regional Office for Africa. The first assessment was done in 2005. The aim of this reassessment, conducted in 2007, was to ascertain if there had been an improvement in laboratory capacity to support activities aimed at improving access to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support programmes.

The scope of this assessment was to:

  • Provide an updated inventory of laboratory capacity and competence within the WHO African Region between 2003 and 2007;
  • Provide comparative statistics for the period between 2003 and 2007;
  • Identify the trends and the gaps to be filled;
  • Develop a report that would be used as a basis for strategic planning.

The report is intended to serve as an advocacy tool for government representatives, nongovernmental organizations, heads of laboratories, WHO and other donors.
