Respiratory Virus Surveillance in the WHO African Region: Week 35: August 28 to September 03, 2023 Bulletin
During Epidemiological week 35, 17 countries in the WHO African region (WHO AFR) contributed virological data for analysis - Algeria, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Niger, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda, and Zambia. During week 35, 1,054 specimens were collected, and 1,044 were tested for influenza.
In epiweek 35, 94 specimens tested positive for influenza virus (positivity of 9%), of which 90 specimens were Influenza A, and 4 specimens were Influenza B. The following Influenza subtypes were identified: Influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 (n = 30), Influenza A (H3) (n = 33), Influenza A (subtyping not performed) (n = 27), Influenza B (lineage not determined) (n = 3), and Influenza B (Victoria) (n = 1).
Cumulatively from weeks 1 to 35, the WHO AFR influenza laboratory network has collected 75,308 specimens and tested 74,968, of which 5,946 were positive for influenza virus (positivity rate 7.93%).
