Lusaka, 28 November 2023 – Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has been honoured with the prestigious CPHIA Lifetime Achievement Award in Public Health for his unwavering commitment to advancing global health and his transformative leadership during unprecedented crises.  

Dr Tedros received the award at the 3rd International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA) opening ceremony in Lusaka on 27 November 2023. 

Africa CDC Director General, Dr Jean Kasaye, applauded Dr Tedros’ transformative leadership, especially his ability to navigate global health challenges with resilience and foresight.

“Dr Tedros' dedication to enhancing healthcare accessibility, equity, and combating health emergencies has greatly impacted the lives of millions worldwide,” he said.  

In his acceptance speech, Dr Tedros said he accepted the award with a mixture of pride and humility and on behalf of all WHO staff who work tirelessly to protect and promote health. Dr Tedros urged African countries to harness resources and invest in strengthening the health sector.

“A healthy Africa will lead to a more developed, stable, and peaceful continent. Let us put our resources together to ensure resilient health systems that serve our populations, especially the most vulnerable,” he added. 

The CPHIA Lifetime Achievement Award is the most esteemed recognition conferred by CPHIA, the African Union's official platform for continental collaboration and policy dialogue on public health. The award is bestowed upon an individual who has significantly contributed to advancing public health in Africa.
