Harare, 18 Sept. 2014 :  WHO supported the Ministry of Health and Child Care to launch the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine demonstration programme in Zimbabwe. The HPV vaccine targets girls before they become sexually active in order to prevent acquisition of sexually transmitted infections, and HPV which causes cervical cancer. Under this programme, Zimbabwe will deliver vaccines to girls aged 10 years in the  2 districts of Marondera and Beitbridge.

September 18, 2014, Nairobi – The WHO Regional Director Dr Luis G Sambo has attributed the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in West Africa to weak health systems, negative traditional beliefs and practices, intense movement of infected people within countries and across borders.

He said the weak health infrastructure at local level had hampered the ability of governments and communities to cope with the complexity and severity of the outbreak. “Moreover, we are facing a disease for which we have neither medicine nor vaccine,” he said.

Harare, 18 Sept 2014 :  “One of the greatest challenges to our current response to ongoing Ebola Virus Disease outbreaks is how to manage the resultant epidemic of fear, panic, myths and misconceptions. But whatever approach we want to adopt for our situation, we must ensure that they are guided by science, documented evidence and international agreements” These were the words of Dr David Okello, WHO Representative in Zimbabwe and IST/ESA Coordinator a.i.  during the workshop held at Rainbow Towers, Harare, Zimbabwe from 16- to 18 September, 2014.

Abuja, 17th September, 2013 - The Memorandum of Understanding for the one million-dollar ($1m) African Development Bank (AfDB) grant towards cushioning the effect of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria has been signed during a well-attended event at the Federal Ministry of Finance Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, 16th September, 2014.

Abuja, 17th September, 2014 - His Excellency Kadré Désiré Ouedraogo, the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has re-affirmed that the  Commission is interested in expanding  collaboration with WHO in the sub-region given the exemplary role played by the Organization in containing the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West-Africa, particularly in Nigeria.

September 17, 2014 - Two experts from WHO, Dr Dominique Legros (HQ Geneva) and Dr Mamoudou H. Djingarey (IST-Ouagadougou) were in Accra from 5th September to 10th September, 2014 to provide technical support to the Ministry of Health in its effort to control the outbreak of cholera in Ghana.

NAIROBI. 17 SEPTEMBER 2014 - A two-day High Level Multi-Sectoral Ministerial meeting on emergency preparedness and response to Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak ended yesterday in Nairobi, Kenya with a call on East African countries to strengthen measures to prevent the spread of the disease in eastern Africa. 

Abuja 16th September, 2014 - The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) in conjunction with partners, including World Health Organization, Nigeria have  developed a 3-year National Routine Immunization Strategic Plan 2013-2015.
