Media Alert: Namibia takes Control of Diabetes: Commemorating World Diabetes Day

Windhoek: 16 November 2010: The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) will commemorate World Diabetes Day through week-long activities, titled: ”Diabetes Education and Prevention with the slogan:"Let's take control of diabetes. Now."

In keeping with the theme of World Diabetes Day, events lined up target both health workers and the general public, noting that action is required at all levels in order to take control of this largely avoidable disease. 

The World Health Organization in the African Region and The Global Fund strengthen collaboration to support countries

Zimbabwe commemorates Mental Health Day

Zimbabwe commemorated a belated Mental Health Day at the Chitungwiza General Hospital under the theme, Mental health and Long term physical illness: The need for continued and integrated care. This year’s theme was aimed at making people and care givers aware that mental health and long term illness have a major impact on each other and should, therefore, be viewed holistically.

Kenya Commemorates World Mental Health Day 2010

Kilindini 29th October 2010 -- Kenya commemorated the 19th World Mental Health Day at the Port Reitz district hospital in Kilindini District of Coast Province. The commemoration brought together officials from the Ministry of Medicals Services, the Coast Provincial Health Management Team (PHMT) and officials from the Prot Reitz District Hospital, the only mental heath center in the province.

Botswana launches mass distribution of long lasting mosquito nets in an effort to achieve universal coverage

On the 23rd of July, 2010 the Ministry of Health and her partners launched mass distribution of Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) in Gweta and Tsokotshaaa villages in the Tutume sub-district, one of the high malaria transmission areas. The activity was officially launched by the Minister of Health, Dr. John Seakgosing, who encouraged the public to exercise maximum co-operation with the government in the effort to eliminate malaria in Botswana by 2015.
