Kenya is experiencing rapid change in the epidemiology of malaria as a result of scaled up malaria control and prevention interventions. At present over two thirdsof the country has malaria prevalence of less than 10%.

The Ministry of Public Health and Sanitationin collaboration with partners will distribute approximately 10 million nets in four provinces (Nyanza, Western, Coast and Rift valley) covering a population of 20 million. The activity is expected to deliver nets to achieve universal coverage by providing one net for every 2 persons in these regions.

Nairobi, 14th February 2011 - Hundreds of infants in Kenya received their first shots against pneumococcal disease today at a special event to celebrate the global roll out of vaccines targeting the world’s biggest child killer –pneumonia.

The ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, was presided over by Kenya’s President, His Excellency Hon Mwai Kibaki.

Kenya hosted the First African Regional workshop on coordinated approaches to pneumonia and diarrhea prevention and control. The Director of Public Health and Sanitation, Dr. Sharif Shenaz officially opened the four-day workshop titled "protect, prevent and treat" on Tuesday 25th January 2011. The workshop, the first in a series of regional workshops aims at finding synergetic actions accelerating the implementation of the Global Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Pneumonia (GAPP) and diarrhea among children under five years of age.

Nairobi 1st December 2010 -- Kenya joined the World in commemorating the 22nd World AIDS Day (WAD) under the theme “Universal Access and Human Rights”.

34 African Universities, Medical, Nursing Schools to Teach CDI Strategy

Nairobi, Kenya 16 November 2010 -- Sixteen universities, medical and nursing schools from nine East and Southern African countries have agreed to introduce the Community-Directed Intervention (CDI) strategy in their curricula, as a way of expanding the use of the innovative and cost-effective strategy which encourages community ownership of health care delivery.

Kenya Commemorates World Mental Health Day 2010

Kilindini 29th October 2010 -- Kenya commemorated the 19th World Mental Health Day at the Port Reitz district hospital in Kilindini District of Coast Province. The commemoration brought together officials from the Ministry of Medicals Services, the Coast Provincial Health Management Team (PHMT) and officials from the Prot Reitz District Hospital, the only mental heath center in the province.

Nairobi, 30 September 2010 -- There has been significant progress and positive development in increasing access to HIV/AIDS services. This was according to the latest progress report released in Nairobi on 28th September as part of the global launch of the report “Towards Universal Access”, also held in Geneva and Washington. The report by WHO, UNICEF and UNAIDS was the fourth annual report for tracking progress made in achieving the 2010 target of providing universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care.
