COVID-19 vaccination in the WHO African Region - 16 December 2022
As of 4 December 2022, a total of 291 million people in the African Region had completed the primary COVID-19 vaccination series, representing 24.9% of the Region’s population. Three countries have surpassed the target of 70% of their population having completed the primary series: Mauritius (86.0%), Liberia (78.9%) and Seychelles (76.7%).

As of 30 October 2022, a total of 273 million people in the African Region had completed the primary COVID-19 vaccination series, representing 23.4% of the Region’s population. Three countries have surpassed the target of 70% of their population having completed the primary series: Mauritius (86.0%), Seychelles (76.5%) and Liberia (75.5%).

As of 4 September 2022, a total of 235 million people in the African Region had completed the primary COVID-19 vaccination series, representing 20.3% of the Region’s population. Two countries in the African Region have surpassed the target of 70% of their population fully vaccinated: Mauritius (75.3%) and Seychelles (76.3%).

This bulletin is published on 30 June 2022, the date set for all countries to achieve 70% of people fully vaccinated per the WHO Strategy to Achieve Global COVID-19 Vaccination by mid-2022. In the African Region, only two countries have achieved this target: Seychelles and Mauritius.

As of 29 May 2022, a total of 169 million people in the African Region had been fully vaccinated, representing 14.7% of the Region’s population. One month before the milestone set for all countries to reach 70% of people fully vaccinated (30 June 2022), only two countries in the African Region have achieved this target: Seychelles and Mauritius.
COVID-19 vaccination in the WHO African Region - 13 May 2022
The percentage of people fully vaccinated in the African Region increased from 13% at the end of March 2022 to 14.3% as of 30 April 2022. Six out of the 20 countries that had less than 10% of their population fully vaccinated in January 2022 have moved upward, surpassing 15% of their population fully vaccinated.

Since the deployment of the multi-partner country support teams in January 2022, there has been good progress in vaccine absorption and uptake in the African Region. Among countries that reported an increase in vaccine uptake in February and/or March, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Ghana recorded the highest increase in vaccination coverage.

The African region is lagging behind in COVID-19 vaccination roll out with only 10.2% of its population fully vaccinated compared to 55.5% globally. Between January and August 2021, the low vaccination coverage was due to insufficientavailability of vaccines. Since August 2021, vaccine supply in the African region has increased significantly, especiallythrough the COVAX Facility, which has donated 69% of all vaccines received in the African region.
