30 August 2020 — A hundred and seventy-seven (177) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 6163 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to four thousand and twenty (4020). To date, one thousand, nine hundred and eighteen (1918) patients have recovered and been discharged, including fourteen (14) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is two thousand and eighty-six (2086) and sixteen (16) deaths.  

A new COVID-19 testing laboratory commissioned in rural Sierra Leone supported by WHO

Commissioning of the Molecular laboratory in Makeni to facilitate scaling up of COVID-19 testing
On 29 August 2020, a newly established WHO-supported COVID-19 testing molecular laboratory was commissioned in Makeni City, northern Sierra Leone, to facilitate scaling up of testing capacity for the disease in the country. This makes the 6th COVID-19 testing site in Sierra Leone, in addition to; the Central Public Health Reference Laboratory, Jui P3 laboratory, Connaught National Teaching and Referral Hospital laboratory, 34 Military laboratory and Kenema Government Hospital laboratory.

29 August 2020 — A hundred and one (101) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 6163 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to three thousand, eight hundred, and forty-three (3843). To date, one thousand, nine hundred and four (1904) patients have recovered and been discharged, including thirty-nine (39) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is one thousand, nine hundred and twenty-three (1923) and sixteen (16) deaths.

28 August 2020 — Seventy (70) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 5159 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to three thousand, seven hundred, and forty-two (3742). To date, one thousand, eight hundred and sixty-six (1866) patients have recovered and been discharged, including three (3) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is one thousand, eight hundred and sixty (1860) and sixteen (16) deaths.  The new death is a Rwandan of 81 years old.

27 August 2020 — Forty-seven (47) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 4597 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to three thousand, six hundred, and seventy-two (3672). To date, one thousand, eight hundred and sixty-three (1863) patients have recovered and been discharged, including fifty-three (53) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is one thousand, seven hundred and ninety-four (1794) and fifteen (15) deaths.

26 August 2020 — Eighty-eight (88) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 5467 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases to three thousand, six hundred, and twenty-five (3625). To date, one thousand, eight hundred and ten (1810) patients have recovered and been discharged, including twenty-one (21) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is one thousand, and eight hundred (1800) and fifteen (15) deaths.

FREETOWN, 27 August, 2020 – The Ministry of Health and Sanitation in collaboration with the World Health Organization, has awarded certificates of participation to 30 laboratory scientists who were recruited and have undergone training in molecular diagnostics as one of the strategies to scale up COVID-19 testing in Sierra Leone. The 30 scientists are university graduates in basic sciences and were selected, based on competencies, to attend a short intensive theoretical and hands-on training in molecular diagnostics.
